Keen to be green goes large!
On the 24th of February Petersfield Primary School pupils went keen to be green and made a giant green monster! Everyone helped to make it and it’s got a garden with it
too. It’s called Reece-icling green gobbler. We did different activities as well, here are some of them: making monster cookies, making our own mini monsters and making willow worlds.
Our school was really excited about making our monster, so we all got together and
collected equipment from everyone’s rubbish that would be useful and green.
The whole point of the day was to get our pupils keen to be green. We have, as a school, seen the results of littering and polluting the environment. Our school has planted seeds and watered them continually, to find out about the life of seeds and looking after them.
The monster was made because we were looking at the WEEE man! The WEEE man stands for Wastes, Electrical, Electronic, and Equipment! Classes have been studying him closely and found out that he contained all of one persons waste over their life. One of the most interesting things we found out was there were 35 mobile phones in it!
We as a school are trying to recycle. By creating this monster we have shown our school members that recycling is good. Even the plant pots have been painted over from ages ago. We really want to recycle as a school! You can as well!

Stargazing?
Did you see the 2 brights stars next to the moon in February? I was coming back from London and saw 2 very bright stars right next to the moon. As we were learning about the solar system and stars at school I was interested to know what they were. When we got home I used my mummy’s phone and went on Google Skymap. I found out they were not actually stars but planets, Jupiter and Venus!
I felt amazed that I could see two planets without a telescope! Over the next few nights we took photographs and we watched as the planets moved closer together. In my photo the big bright disc is the moon. The planet below is Venus and the planet above is Jupiter.
After a few weeks of watching, Venus had moved higher than Jupiter. I am inspired to look at the sky at night more and use Google Skymap to see what the stars names are and if I can see any more planets!

Peterborough’s Rucking Rugby Tournament
On Sunday the 8th October Shelford went to a rugby tournament held by their distant rivals Peterborough. In what seemed to be a really crunching string of games.
Shelford managed to win the shield which is the shining trophy that gives a team a fantastic 3rd place and this year Shelford won it by the biggest of margins. Their super tackler Ollie helped Shelford’s victory with some cracking tackles and some very powerful runs and terrorised the oppositions defence. Everyone loved all the action and all the parents were so proud.
Shelford coach Lesley Gelling said “The children improve every game which is a massive achievement for their age”. Lots of other teams would usually face a tough challenge either suffering a bad loss a draw or very rarely a win.
Shelford player Ben said” Its really fun playing out on the pitch and I feel really proud of myself for something I achieved” Shelford players mum said” The boy’s run their hearts out and it’s a pleasure to see my son enjoy himself so much”
